After a semester long study of South Boston, my partner and I assumed the role of design and planning consultants that aim to focus on developing spaces that honor a neighborhood’s history and community while building upon existing creative networks. Specifically, we focused on Fort Point in South Boston. We planned to help define Fort Point by leveraging and strengthening the existing creative community by presenting a vision that aimed to: shape the built environment, foster connectivity, encourage educational and creative activation, and plan for sea level rise. My partner and I created two strategies that contributed to the accomplishment of our overall vision. I specifically created a set of urban design guidelines for the public realm in Fort Point that addressed the preservation and promotion of the creative community in the area. I broke my guidelines down into three design goals:
resilient design, inclusive architecture, and tactile urbanism/placemaking.
